When is the best time to start?

Often this topic comes up during new consults where the individual inquiring about personal training retreats back to a stance where they claim they will start when such a such happens and it will suit them better when something or other occurs where they claim that they will have more time to contribute towards the goal. I will use this article to highlight my thoughts on this mindset and the reality of most situations.
First things first, I will highlight that the title here acts somewhat as a trick question of sorts, to many people’s dismay - the only answer suitable here is “now”. People searching for the answer to this question often don’t ever get the opportunity to actually start as they are too concerned with finding the perfect conditions to fit their narrative.
The reality of the situation is that there will never really be a perfect time to start. There is always going to be something or other happening behind the scenes that isn’t 100% in alignment with your goals. The best advice I can give to the majority of people is to start now. Take the first step. Let it be a small step. It is the accumulation of these smaller steps over longer periods of time that bring us more fulfilling and sustainable results.
If you feel that you are resonating with this article and find yourself procrastinating with when and how to begin your journey - use this as your sign to make a start. Take the first step, go for that walk, try out that gym nearby and start working on your diet. Take it one step at a time and focus on moving slowly towards the person you want to become. Over time your small efforts will accumulate and take you towards bigger goals. The hardest part of the journey is starting. After this - the only way is up.
