2 things I would do to Age with a little more grace?

As we age, it is common for us to start experiencing the effects of aging and these can differ person to person. What I see a lot in clinic and through observing the general population? I see people become less active as they get older, they are often told or tell themselves that they need to slow down and remember their age. Others believe they are doing more harm than good by increasing their efforts to move more and develop their exercise tolerance. In this article I hope to offer some advice on this topic by highlighting 2 things I would do if I wanted to make the most of life as I age and understand what my body is truly capable of!
Lifting weights!
The hard truth that people are slowly starting to accept. As we age we start to see a reduction in bone density and lean muscle mass. Alongside the normal age related changes such as arthritis - this can be the perfect storm for pain and dysfunction to become a problem. The good news is that lifting weights 2-3 times per weeks has been found to help overcome this by improving your bone density and muscle mass while helping you to build strength and resilience in your body to better manage the stressors that life throws your way!
Daily movement!
This goes without saying - but daily movement is what is going to help you stay active in your later years. Making an excuse to get out and about, walks with friends or take yourself out for a coffee and a walk. Maybe invest in a bike for at home and aim to get 15-30 mins per day on the days you are falling behind. It is a very straight forward concept with very valuable rewards. Make an excuse to move your body for at least 30-60 minutes per day, remembering that motion is lotion!
Tasks that require you to exert yourself and may seem challenging in the moment are not to be seen as unsafe as you age. Like everything in life, moderation is key. Little but OFTEN efforts each day are what keeps you strong and functional by challenging your body to do more!
