What story do you tell yourself?

Something I have noticed with clients over time is the difference in how they approach each task. Usually there are two types of people here. Firstly there is the individual who says yes I will make sure I get X,Y and Z done. If there is a problem I will let you know, or I will try this.. Etc. Then there is the individual with commitment issues to their goal and often a lack of belief in their ability to follow through with their actions. It is often this individual will reply with something like.. “I’ll see if I can” or “I can’t because of x, y and z.
The problem here isn’t the barriers that may or may not be in place. They do not offer an alternative on how they might overcome said barriers and tend to leave everything up in the air. This can often come across as a cop out, but more often it is a lack of self belief and understanding of what is required to reach a goal. We don’t need things to be perfectly done week to week, but we do need to make sure they are getting DONE week to week! For example, if you were to get in for half of your gym session as opposed to not going at all - I would class this as a win. You are controlling the controllable and are making an effort. This is all I can ask as a coach.
Naturally, the first individual is in a better position to get a higher quality result and is more likely to get there much quicker. There isn’t any issue with having barriers, but we must better orientate our approach to overcome these if we want to make progress and make the necessary changes in our health and fitness. I believe setting some non-negotiables each where you set some achievable tasks that CAN be done. Decide what you CAN do each week, instead of focusing on what you Can’t. A lot of times there are things we can do despite our circumstances that will help to take you closer to your goal. Small efforts, no matter how insignificant they feel - are what accumulate over time and take you towards your end goal when it comes to being a fitter, healthier and happier you!
