What I’m doing on holiday to stay on track!

At the moment I am taking a much needed week away from work on the lovely Island of Santorini. As my training and nutrition has been very dialed in over the last number of months, I have opted to take this week as a break from the gym in an effort to allow motivation to train and overall recovery to be in a better place upon my return. However, this does NOT mean I abandon the goal orientated habits I have been sustaining over the last few months. In this article I offer some insight into what I am doing!
Nutritionally, I am enjoying myself while following the same principles when it comes to putting meals together. In the morning there is a breakfast buffet where I’m staying. First things I prioritise protein with some bacon and eggs, for my carbohydrates I am opting for some bread, to ensure I am getting enough fibre I also have a banana and an apple. For lunch and dinner where I travel the streets of fira and Oia - I choose a meal with a high protein source. My personal preference here is a burger or steak, I then add carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, rice or chips while also opting for some veg and salad on the side where available to stay on top of fibre intake and ensure I am optimising food quality and ensuring I am getting micro vitamins in where I can! These actions in combinations with sufficient water intake throughout the day is more than enough for most people.
From an activity point of view, I like to ensure I keep my step count relatively high. This means I will try and walk most places to ensure I am moving enough throughout the day. In my opinion this is more than enough from an activity standpoint if you are using the holiday for recovery/relaxation purposes. If you enjoy it nor feel so inclined- a few sessions in the hotel gym while away can be a great way of putting the extra food consumed to great use!
The last thing I’m doing on this holiday to stay on track is to enjoy myself! When not on holiday I can go through periods of living a very regimented lifestyle while I push myself to complete task after task. The purpose of a holiday can often be to switch off in order to replenish the energy to remain on your current path. Therefore making sure to follow through with the purpose of the holiday has to be a priority if we want it to do what we desire. Try turn off your phone for periods of time. Enjoy and live in the moments while making some memories.
