3 things I wish I knew sooner on my fitness journey!

As I have learned and progressed along my fitness journey, my experiences have helped to better shape my perspective on what truly matters when it comes to working on your health and fitness. In many cases this is more straightforward than you would think, I hope to share this in 3 simple principles which I wish I had better understood earlier in my career!

Consistency beats perfection!

Perfection can seem great, it can even appear to be the bare minimum in terms of expectations when you first set out on your fitness journey! However, it is important to see the nuance here - in order to make long term change a reality - you must have a plan in place that you can stick to, not your vision of what is perfect.

Simple works best!

In my experience, the more complex and fancy you try and make things - the more room you leave for error. Yes the complex stuff can have its place for a small minority under certain conditions - but in most cases the return on investment is usually far greater to things simple and have things set up in a way that they are easy to repeat on a consistent basis. The best programming isn’t the most complex or detailed - it is the plan that you find easy to stick to on a daily basis that is more likely to yield far higher returns on a long term basis.

The bar is lower than you think!

While I see a lot of benefit in setting high standards for yourself and your future goals. Don’t let this blur the bigger picture. When you zoom out and look at what baseline fitness markers are - you are likely closer than you think if you are simply getting to the gym 2-3 times per week, getting frequent walks and some cardio in across the week and eating a diet high in protein and fibre.

These are simply 3 small things I wish I better understood earlier in my training journey and career. It is easy to be blinded by the highlight reels online that paint a distorted picture of the fitness industry. In reality, it is simply getting the small things done week to week and taking one week at a time!
