The more and more clients I work with, the more I begin to become aware of attributes that correlate with results. The clients who progress the most often behave differently to those who are less likely to progress. In this article I will cover 3 attributes that I feel play a key role in a client getting the most out of the personal training service and why this is so.
Attitude.
At the beginning of the coaching process it is often expected for a client to arrive full to the brim of motivation and good intentions to progress on their health and fitness journey. However, the want to get results and the want to understand the process are often not mutually exclusive. While it is important to have a positive attitude when it comes to our ambition to reach certain milestones - we must also develop the attitude that change requires change and we must be willing to understand that to get things we never had we must do things we’ve never done.
Curiosity.
This variable is an absolute game changer when it comes to making the most out of the coaching process. A coach is there to guide you, but we are also here to educate and empower you to take control and understand the process. A client who is constantly asking questions is not only learning themselves - but is also pushing their coach to consistently develop their knowledge and understanding of topics they may not have come across before. As coaches we want you to ask questions as it reassures us that you are understanding the process and are not guessing when it comes to carrying out the goal oriented tasks we set such as cardio, nutrition targets and exercise selection. This further helps to improve the accuracy of everything you do and further enhances your motivation as you better understand why you do what you do.
Pride.
This is where ego can come in helpful. A client who pushes themselves in an effort to impress and in some cases to not let you or others down often tends to be very efficient when it comes to making progress. This due to the persistent desire to get better and to live up to the standards they have set themselves. A client who has set themselves high standards often makes the coaching process quite seamless as they are constantly pushing themselves to become better, the caveat to this is that sometimes they need to be told to ease off the gas and reassured if they are overdoing it. Nonetheless, I personally feel this is a great attribute to have!
There are a wide array of variables that play a role in a client making progress with a coach. These are just a few observations I have made over the last few years coaching a wide array of individuals!
