Speed does not trump direction - Forward is forward.

Writer: coachedbycashelcoachedbycashel

A topic that comes up often with clients when discussing how we approach certain milestones on their fitness journey. It is understandable that we want to get to our goal as fast as possible. However, this is not always the right approach when striving for quality and an efficient process when it comes to the sustainability of our actions. Making progress and reaching our goal is only one element of the equation in my eyes - sustaining the results and the maintenance and continuous development of healthier habits is really where clients will take the value from my service. At least that is what I believe to be true with regard to how individuals develop an understanding of their daily actions and using the tools they have been equipped with during the coaching process to navigate these obstacles and maintain the progress they have made.

My approach will usually be to firstly define some healthy behaviours and habits that may seem simple  - but will start to point us in the right direction and ensure we are on the path. This path will be the foundation of our timeline towards the goals that we set. Having these behaviours to fall back on when things go wrong will help to ensure we can maintain our course and get things moving back in the direction we have set. Speed will usually be defined by level of accuracy we can then apply to the finer details of our training and nutrition once we have mastered our baseline habits. Baseline habits can be as simple as our step counts, protein targets, water intake or our sleep duration targets! The finer details may be the level of accuracy we apply to our macro and micro nutrient intakes as well as the intensity and specificity we apply to our training.

In the beginning, set some easy habits you know you can stick to that are aligned with your goals, build on these as you get more confident in your routine. It doesn’t need to be complicated. I would rather be moving slow in the right direction than fast in the wrong direction - it is not a race at the end of the day!
