Often I find that people tend to overcomplicate the simple things at the start of their fitness journey’s or when they are simply looking to get back into the swing of things. In my opinion it is at this point that we really emphasize the simplicity of the tasks we set ourselves. It can be tempting to watch what other more experienced gym goers can be doing - but we must learn to run our own race! Start at the bottom and work your way up the ladder.
Finding some simple tasks we can complete on a daily basis can be our first step on this journey. Aiming to hit a certain amount of steps each day, consume 2-3 high protein sources throughout the day and setting yourself a target for your water intake which may look something like 3-5 glasses of water throughout the day. This behaviour change will help to set the tone.
In the gym - you could aim for 2-3 gym sessions per week - these sessions could have just 4-6 different exercises. We can repeat these exercises for each gym session and do not need to have different exercises for each session - choosing a couple of exercises that hit each muscle group and are movements we enjoy and can complete safely is more than enough - especially in the initial stages as you find your feet. More advanced program design can be effective as we start to set more gym based goals and get more comfortable in a gym environment.
Improving your health and fitness is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. These habits are something you hope to sustain, adapt and integrate into your life as you get older and circumstances fluctuate. Focus on moving your body more, getting stronger and more confident in your body while making small efforts on a consistent basis to further improve the decision making outside the gym when it comes to your nutrition and recovery. The rest will develop as you better understand what works for you and begin to see the results of your actions thereby increasing your trust in the process!
