New year's helpful habits!

Writer: coachedbycashelcoachedbycashel

As we embrace the new year and the societal rush to re-embark on our health and fitness endeavours - it can be easy to miss the forest for the trees when it comes to what we can be prioritising as we look to get into a healthier routine that will take us in the desired direction! As a coach in gym settings I see first hand the lengths people go to in January where they have almost gone from 0 to 100 miles an hour when it comes to their baseline. If you have spent a month or so doing very little  - it is usually best to ease yourself in and build from the ground up. You wouldn’t start your running journey by first attempting a marathon before you’ve even mastered a 5k! So please don’t treat the gym any differently!!

Start small with things like increasing your daily step count to around 10k a day, this helps us to essentially move more! Prioritise a protein source in each meal and aim to drink a glass of water with each meal. When it comes to the gym - have a plan. Aim for 2-3 days that you will train that week. Stick with this approach until you fully settle into a sustainable routine!

This is a very simple approach - but a very effective one nonetheless. Save yourself the overwhelm and burnout - start small and build as you go. You are looking to build a positive relationship with exercise and healthy eating - make subtle changes and always approach things with the mindset that you want the plan to fit around your life and not vice versa!

Embrace change and consider subtle swaps for things you are already doing within your daily life! If your plan each evening is to watch your favourite show on netflix - make an agreement with yourself that will get out for a thirty minute walk before hand - you will soon find these habits to become natural as you begin to see how simple changes can make you feel!
