Create meaningful goals.

Writer: coachedbycashelcoachedbycashel

As I begin to work with more and more individuals on their health and fitness journeys and encounter a wider array of individuals with age ranges varying from 19 to 78 years old! Their goals and the reasoning behind them is likely going to be very different! It is in each situation that I ask my clients to truly think about what they want to achieve and why these goals are so important to them as an individual. I usually will ensure that our goals are monitored using a plethora of different outcome measures and subjective feedback.

As my first example, an individual who is looking to lose some weight and improve their overall health. We will of course (where appropriate) monitory daily to weekly bodyweight readings.  However, we will not stop here! We will observe other changes over time with elements such as body composition and more recently with one client - observing improvements in how certain clothes fit where maybe they previously didn't fit so well!

On the other end of the spectrum, I have been working with an older individual who is almost 80 years of age! We have been working hard in the gym and making exercise selection choices relative to their goals! Each week I am asking what’s changing in their life and the improvements in such a small time has been mind blowing! Neck pain improved through strengthening exercises and moving through an increased range of motion. Client also notified me they were able to get out of the bath independently for the first time in a long time - this was a huge win in itself! Another improvement highlighted since starting was being able to lift up his leg to tie his own shoe lace! To someone who can do these tasks without difficulty this may not seem a big deal, but to this individual - it is another thing they can do more independently and therefore contributing to their overall quality of life in a great way!

Let’s be more intentional with the goals we now set in our health and fitness goals. The aim to lose weight and build muscle are worthy pursuits, but having some functional and performance goals is what is going to help sustain your momentum and build more sustainable change moving forward!
