A common misconception.

As part of my personal training or online coaching service - I will first have an initial consultation with the client to discuss their goals, expectations and to get an overarching summary of their past experience (if any) with training for health and fitness. One common theme that is said in almost 90% of my consultations goes something a little like this.. “I want to lift weights but I don’t want to get too big or bulky. There are of course a multitude of directions I can take with this response, but I firstly like to confirm and acknowledge the primary goal. The reality of it is that a lot of these clients have the priority of weight loss as their driving motivation to get started and the common desire to look “more toned” as a result.

In order to achieve a “more toned” or “leaner” body composition - we must generally be holding an adequate amount of lean muscle mass. Muscle mass is not something that is easily built and it is generally very hard to build the amount of muscle mass required to resonate with what most might refer to as “bulky”. In general, the more lean muscle mass we have on our frame, the more of an improvement we will see in overall body composition. I like to explain it as the ratio of fat mass to lean muscle mass being shifted more so in favour of lean muscle mass which helps us to look more “toned” as a result due to the visual differences in fat mass versus lean muscle mass. This is a very over-simplified take to try and get this idea across - I could go on for days to explain the benefits of having more muscle mass and better strength but that is for another day.

If you are to take anything from this piece, if you are to start some resistance training and better orientate your diet to be slightly higher in protein (and possibly a little lower in calories depending on your current intake) you will be providing yourself with a productive environment to build muscle and achieve a better overall body composition - not to mention improving your overall health and wellbeing!
