This is something people often spend a little too long thinking about in my opinion. In a world where we strive for optimism and close the gap between perfection and reality. The secret formula to the perfect workout is something many individuals will waste their whole life chasing. The perfect program can mean lots of different things to different people! It will naturally be defined around your goals and core values. Understanding your overall objective here should be most people’s first thought.
Once you have an idea what your overall goal is - it is much easier to reverse engineer ideas and a timeline approach to reach this goal. Whether your goal is to lose some weight, become mr olympia, or even run a marathon - the perfect program will be different on a case by case basis. A lot of you reading this are probably asking why I am making such an obvious conclusion appear to be so groundbreaking.
The statement in question is not groundbreaking, but more so the way you view “perfect” for you. A lot of people reading this will likely have some arbitrary goals with a variety of very different starting points. However similar rules will normally apply when it comes to what I would categorize as the perfect program for you. I will summarize below.
The perfect program is often the program you can stick to. While the program must be specific to your goal - it must be embedded to fit around your current lifestyle. This may not be optimal, but it ensures you have a much better chance of reaching your goal. The perfect program must also have a progression model in my eyes - whether it’s running, exercise or a sport - there must be some form of progression model to track progress.
Maybe it’s our running distance or time, amount of weight we can put on the bar, amount of minutes we can play consistently with our local 5 a side team. Maybe this is much more health focused - improvements in blood pressure, your blood tests or other important health markers when you next visit your gp!These help to map a route to your overall goal and help you to better orientate your daily behaviours around these tasks as you embark on your fitness journey! Health and fitness is a journey - not a destination!
